DIY Hacks for Making a Vertical Succulent Wall

By Tom Nonmacher

As an experienced gardener and lover of all things DIY, I'm thrilled to share with you today one of my favorite projects: creating a vertical succulent wall. This is a fantastic way to bring greenery into your home or garden in a stylish and unique way, and it's much easier than you might think. A vertical succulent wall takes up minimal space and is a great way to showcase the beautiful variety of these hardy plants.

First, let's cover what you'll need to get started. You'll need a shadow box or picture frame, cactus soil, chicken wire, and, of course, a variety of succulents. You can find these supplies at your local garden center or online. I recommend selecting a variety of succulents for visual interest, but make sure they all have similar sunlight and watering needs.

Before you begin planting, you'll want to prepare your frame. Install the chicken wire into the frame, ensuring it’s taut and secure. This will provide a structure for your plants to grow on. Next, fill the frame with cactus soil. This type of soil is perfect for succulents as it drains well and prevents root rot.

Now comes the fun part: planting your succulents. Start by carefully removing them from their pots and shaking off any excess soil. Trim the roots slightly to encourage new growth. Then, using a pencil or similar tool, make a hole in the soil within the frame. Place your succulent into the hole, and gently press the soil around the roots to secure it.

The key to a visually appealing succulent wall is variety and arrangement. Mix different sizes, colors, and textures of succulents. You could create a pattern, or go for a more random arrangement. Either way, make sure to plant them close together - succulents are desert plants and are used to growing in close quarters.

Once all your succulents are planted, it's time to let them settle in. Leave the frame flat in a shaded area for a few weeks. This allows the succulents time to root into the soil before you hang it up. Once the roots are established, you can hang your succulent wall vertically. Choose a location that gets plenty of indirect sunlight, as too much direct sun can scorch the leaves.

Maintenance is relatively simple. Water your succulent wall sparingly - a good rule of thumb is to only water when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is the most common cause of death for succulents. And remember, succulents are slow growers, so be patient. It may take a while for your succulent wall to fully fill in, but the results are worth the wait.

A vertical succulent wall is a beautiful and unique addition to any home or garden. It's a conversation starter and a fun DIY project that you can be proud of. With a little patience and creativity, you can create a stunning piece of living art. And the best part? You can change it up as often as you like, adding new plants and creating new arrangements whenever the mood strikes. Happy planting!
