Weekend Project: adding washable covers to living room cushions
By Tom Nonmacher
Weekends are the perfect time to tackle home improvement projects, especially those that can add a fresh touch to your living room. One such project that isn't too taxing but can make a significant difference in your living room's aesthetic is adding washable covers to your cushions. Not only do these covers protect your cushions from stains and wear, but they also offer an easy way to change the look of your room seasonally or whenever the mood strikes.
To start, measure your cushions accurately. You'll need to know the length, width, and depth of your cushions to ensure that your covers will fit perfectly. Remember to add a bit of extra space to accommodate any padding or stuffing. The last thing you want is a cover that's too tight or too loose.
Next, select a fabric that complements your existing décor and meets your practical needs. If you have young children or pets, you may want to choose a durable, stain-resistant material. Natural fabrics such as cotton or linen are wonderful choices, but synthetic fabrics can also work well and often offer increased durability. For a touch of luxury, consider velvet or silk. Remember to consider the washing instructions for your chosen fabric; it needs to be washable!
Once you've chosen your fabric, it's time to cut out your pattern pieces. You'll need two pieces for the top and bottom of the cushion and one long strip for the sides. Remember to leave a seam allowance for sewing. If you're new to sewing, there are countless tutorials online to guide you through the process, or you can enlist the help of a crafty friend.
When you're ready to sew, take your time and be precise. Nothing ruins a DIY project faster than rushing. Be sure to sew all your seams securely, and consider adding a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying. If you're adding a zip or buttons for easy removal, be sure these are securely attached and easy to open and close.
Once your covers are sewn, it's time to fit them onto your cushions. This should be a snug fit but not so tight that the fabric is straining. If you've measured and sewn accurately, your new covers should slide on with a bit of gentle coaxing. Make any necessary tweaks, then sit back and admire your handiwork.
Adding washable covers to your living room cushions is a fantastic weekend project that can refresh your living space without breaking the bank. It's a project that can be tailored to your skill level and offers an opportunity to inject some personal style into your décor. Plus, the practical benefits of being able to wash away spills and stains mean your cushions will stay looking fresh and new for much longer.
So why not give it a go? With a bit of time, some careful measurement, and a dash of creativity, you can transform your living room with custom cushion covers. And remember, the beauty of this project is that you can always make more covers if you fancy a change. Happy sewing!
