Weekend Project: installing tile floors for easy cleanup

By Tom Nonmacher

Weekends are the perfect time to tackle those home improvement projects you've been putting off, and one of the most rewarding and functional upgrades you can install in your home is a tile floor. Tile flooring is not just aesthetically pleasing, but it also offers the advantage of easy cleanup – an essential feature for anyone with children, pets, or just a busy lifestyle. Today's focus will be on how to install tile floors as a weekend project.

First things first, you need to determine how much tile you will need for your project. Measure the area of the room where the tile will be installed, and then add an extra 10% to account for any tiles that may break or be cut incorrectly. Don’t forget to also purchase the appropriate adhesive and grout for your tile.

Before you start with the installation, ensure that your subfloor is clean and level. This is crucial because any imperfections can cause problems down the line. For concrete subfloors, you may need to fill in any holes or cracks with a concrete filler. For wood subfloors, you may need to install a cement backer board to provide a stable base for the tile.

After prepping the subfloor, it's time to start laying the tile. Starting at the center of the room, apply adhesive to the back of each tile and press it firmly into place. Use tile spacers to ensure even gaps between each tile for grout lines. Work your way out from the center of the room, checking periodically with a level to make sure the tiles are even.

Once all the tiles have been laid, allow the adhesive to dry completely. This usually takes about 24 hours, but it can vary depending on the type of adhesive you used. After the adhesive has dried, it’s time to apply the grout. Using a rubber float, spread the grout across the tile, making sure to push it into the spaces between the tiles. Wipe off any excess with a damp sponge, being careful not to remove the grout from the spaces between the tiles.

After the grout has dried, you'll have a beautiful new tile floor that is not only attractive but also easy to clean. Remember to seal the grout lines to prevent staining and to prolong the life of your new floor. With just a bit of planning and a weekend's work, you can significantly enhance the look and functionality of any room in your home.

Installing tile floors is a relatively simple and cost-effective way to update your home. They are also a great option for those who want a low-maintenance, easy-to-clean flooring solution. So whether you're upgrading your kitchen, bathroom, or any other area in your home, consider tile flooring for its durability, beauty, and ease of maintenance.

Enjoy the process and take pride in the fact that you've improved your home with your own two hands. Remember, every home improvement project, no matter how small, adds value to your home and enhances your living space. So roll up your sleeves, grab your tools, and get ready to install that tile floor. You'll be glad you did.
